VW is hoping their new Polo slogan and campaign will help to wash away the memories of Lee and Dan's suicide bomber viral.
DDB London's ads launch a new model of the car and a new slogan - "Polo - built to protect." The TV advert, filmed in Rio, shows a city filled with guardian angels, protecting their humans. The campaign, created by Feargal Balance and Dylan Harrison and directed by Frederic Planchon, also includes print.
Why didn't they just capitalise on the viral? Der! Dumb. And changing the slogan? Plus the "guardian angel" bullshit??They really could have had some fun with this. A great opportunity lost.

PermalinkI hated that piece of shit viral ad. It went way over the line of subject matter suitable for commercials. There was nothing cool or funny or clever or "fun" about making an ad with a fucking suicide bomber in it.
Whether or not the current campaign makes the best use of the protection strategy is a whole other discussion.

PermalinkYeah? Except it stood out like dogballs - which is what advertising is all about.

PermalinkWell, I stand corrected then. Suicide bombing IS an appropriate subject matter for a major car manufacturer (or anybody for that matter) to use in its tv advertising, because all that matters is turning people's heads, regardless of how it turns their stomach.
Time to dust off those immolation scripts, everybody. Weber BBQs wants 'em.
