Citizens United has booked billboard space near the near the Kodak Theatre (where the Acadamy Awards are held) for the month of February. The billboards that look like they have been art directed by a chimp with glaucoma thank Hollywood A-listers for their help getting President Bush reelected. Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, Martin Sheen, Chevy Chase, Barbara Streisand, and Sean Penn are the targets for this highly illogical campaign. (read more)
Perhaps it is because I'm not American that I don't quite understand the "rule" where celebs from the country singing Dixie Chicks to the documentary making Michael Moore should "shut up" about their opinions in a country that is otherwise so proud of their freedom of speech, but other celebs like Ann Coulter who thinks Canada sent fighting troops to Vietnam and argues it with a Canadian reporter, may share theirs that I don't understand this campaign at all. It depends on what kind of celeb you are? If you're an actor, singer or documentary filmmaker you shall keep your opinion to yourself? The "funny" is , I guess, that the Hollywood A-list opinions sent voters the other way? Nobody wants to be like Michael Moore? I don't know what this poster is trying to say, your guess is a good as mine.

That's the opinion of many in the US. I'm not sure why exactly Hollywood celebrity political opinions are so hated, yet media celebrities are taken at 1000 times their face value. It's their right to speak up for what they believe, as you say.
I do wonder, however, if this group obtained the proper rights to the images of all them folk. ;)

PermalinkCelebrities - and I use that term loosely when referring to the likes of Ben "Gigli" Affleck, Chevy "Caddyshack II" Chase and Whoopi "Hollywood Squares" Goldberg - have every right to express their opinions. I think what bothers so many people is the weight that these opinions seem to carry.
Sean Penn may be a brilliant actor. But is his opinion on Iraq any more important, any more informed than the guy manning the cash register at Blockbuster? Just because someone is famous doesn't make them an expert on foreign policy. It's like having Paul Wolfowitz do movie reviews ("Thumbs up to 'Apopcalypse Now!' The blood, the gore, the devastation! It's the feel-good film of the year!")
To me, perhaps the most disturbing thing about this billboard is Chevy Chase's eerie resemblance to a Galapagos tortoise.

hahah! Too true.
I think part of the issue overall is that we're being told what to think by everyone, from the Hollywood celebs to the media dahrlings...including Miss Ann. Shame we can't think for ourselves.
