Zelda Rubinstein wasn't just your stereotypical "mother" vision in these ads for L.A. CARES, she was active in the fight against AIDS in her own time when it wasn't fashionable to be so. She attended the first AIDS Project Los Angeles AIDS Walk. She also played the mother in TV ads that aired alongside this campaign, which soon went national. "There's a time to talk. There's a time to play. There's a time to talk about play" she'd say, encouraging all young gay men to bring their rubbers, as if she was the nagging worried mom to all of them.
