For the holidays, mobile phone company Koodo spread the cheer in Toronto's Distillery Market with the help of some singers of Toronto's Choir! Choir! Choir! . Except they weren't singing Christmas carols, they were singing The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love." They also posted garlands around the market that read FA LA LA LA LA (LA LA LA LA), WARM THOUGHTS PEOPLE, and MISTLETOE. Robert Smith, for his part, asked the agency to donate his licensing fee to charity, and they used it to help sponsor a Syrian refugee family.
From the non-Christmas Christmas carol to the carefully chosen innocuous garland messaging, to the cause du jour, this whole spot seems so incredibly politically correct it's as if the underlying message is "We can't spread cheer unless we make sure no one gets offended in the process." I'm surprised the choir didn't ask for consent from the audience before they sang.
