Frank Ocean might be the kind of guy who lights his cigars with money, I don't know. Judging by this check posted to his personal tumblr account in response to the suit filed by Chipotle against him that the Hollywoodreporter shares with us, I think he might be. As it happens, Chipotle hired Frank Ocean to perform the Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory song “Pure Imagination” for their now famous ad "Scarecrow".
Ocean's representative's, who have more in their vocabulary than F-bombs, explained why Ocean refused to do the job, leaving Fiona Apple to pick up his slack:
"When Frank was asked to participate in this project, Chipotle’s representatives told him that the thrust of the campaign was to promote responsible farming. There was no Chipotle reference or logo in the initial presentation, and Chipotle told Frank that was an intentional element of the campaign. "
Uh-huh. Okay. So we're supposed to infer here that Ocean has scruples and doesn't want to do branded commercials because brands are bad, or something. People with real scruples return the check before they are sued, Ocean. Or you know, you could just turn down the job. Let say we believe that Ocean thought it was about promoting responsible farming.... Responsible farming is Chipotle's brand. And Chipotle was signing the check.
Now that Ocean has delivered such a classy response online, Chipotle has had a look at it, and replied: If/when we get a check from Frank, we should be able to close the books on this. Right now, all we have is a photo online." Dear Mr Frank Ocean, you don't have scruples, you're being an ass. There is a difference.
