You are absolutely right Neaner. And I am glad that I stood up to it and it made a difference.
I'd also like to say that, the picture you posted was 20 years ago and China has moved on sooooooo much from that era. I hope people will from now on look at China and its people with a fresh pair of eyes, without the prejudice and the stereotype.
Thanks
Hi Big phew,
First of all, thanks for your support and I understand your passion and frustration. However, I will have to agree with dabitch and may I suggest us all to be cool-headed and collected. Insulting the Red Cross or Simon personaly is not our purpose or goal of this debate. We simply want to point out the error in this campaign and try to put this typical ignorant western mindset to rest. I agree that we need to be firm with our opinions, but I also believe, we need to present a rational argument to convince and educate other people, shouting over eachother or 'verbally' attacking each other would only weaken our stand. What do you think?
Once again, thanks!
A correction.
The three photographs on the bottom of my posted image, show similar anti-terrorist drill carried out by the Chinese army / police forces. It has come to my attention that they may not have taken place on the same day of the top image. Apologies for the error, however my point still stands.
Hi all,
I have managed to trace back to the source of one of the images that was used for this particular campaign, which 'allegedly' portraits Chinese army's unrest of Tibetan or the China's human rights abuse.
It was actually taken at an 'Anti-illegal stowaway inspection practice' which took place in Zhe Jiang province in October 2006. I have attached the original image (uncropped), you can also see it online at this address:
As you can see, there are shipment containers in the background which indicates that the location is by the sea, and you should know Tibet is nowhere near any sea! There are also other images taken on the same day and here's the link to the news piece about this practice on XinHua net - China's news agency.
This is a typical example of ignorance and hypocricy. Using fake image to make your point and cropping the images to twist the fact? What has the Red Cross become? Where's your sense of reponsibility and concience? This campaign is a total sham and you really should be ashamed of yourselves.
Thanks for the input
I agree, they do look staged and I think that explains quite a lot really as they are supposed to be staged. It was a practice for the anti-illegal stowaway mission, and obviously a photo-op for the news agencies as well.

I recommend you sack your communication officer and your picture provider agency and improve your 'fact checking' procedure in your future campaigns to avoid similar embarrasing mistakes. I also demand proper action to be taken by the Red Cross to correct this mistake and apologise for the damage it has caused.
Jake
Thanks guys for all your comments. I guess this campaign completed backfired for the Red Cross. I didn't understand why Simon would have re-posted this and raised it to frontpage exposure, but I sure am glad to see the outcome.
"Perhaps they should have used a variety of countries that are competing in the Games to highlight the issue of human rights (UK, USA, China, etc) rather than focusing on one nation? Would that be the right way to go about it?"
Well said! Completely agree!

Big Phew,
Once again, I totally understand your frustration, but please, stop the personal attack and verbal abuse. We can't force our belief down other people's throat, we have to allow other people have their own opinions and all we can do is to lay out the facts and listen to what they have to say. Otherwise, what difference is there between us and the western ignorant bunch? We certainly can't achieve what we want to achieve by 'shouting' and 'swearing' at people. We are all reasonable people, and I relate very much to your anger, but from what I can see, this blog has been very neutral in allowing both sides of the story to be expressed.
Thanks
