Just got this from PETA;
PETA's new billboard features an, ahem, "full figured" Florida woman whose blubber is spilling over a skimpy bikini next to the tagline: "Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian." It reminds people who are struggling to lose weight—and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball—that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini.
I'm supposed to bring a positive message about healthy eating from that middle-school style sneering at "hurf durf butter-eater whale woman" poster? When in the very same week, they unveal yet another half-naked celebs curves? That's not the message I'm getting, since I'm all too familiar with PETA's history of using women in their ads. God forbid a woman is chubby! Looking good in a bikini - or without one - is all that counts! Women in PETA's world should be pleather wearing porn-stars, silicone enhanced baywatch babes, girls gone wild Milk-dispensers and naked celebrities. If they're not naked and pregnant in pig pens in public, of course. The only time I've seen them mention a man was in passing when they compared the Greyhound Bus murders to chicken slaughter.
PETA, you have finally done it. You have made me change my mind about something. Congratulations. However, it won't be to your liking. I'm going out right now get some Kobe Steak for dinner wearing my endangered species ocelot fur coat and if any one of your mink-releasing vegan followers dares to as much as sneer in my direction I'm making a hat out of their bony ass.
Client: PETA
These ads amaze me! It's as though they're completely unaware that they're offending and marginalizing large segments of the population by creating this drivel.
There are smart ways to get one's message heard, and PETA's core purpose is certainly a relevant one. Why they resort to cheap shots like this, and subsequently bring their mission into question is an utter mystery to me.

PermalinkJeez. They really are ridiculous.

PermalinkThat headline goes a long way around the block to make the message. "Save the whales" by dieting, using whales to mean obese people, if they diet they won't be obese, so there'd be no whales? And then I am supposed to conclude that were saving them from bad health.

PermalinkYeah, this ad doesn't work at all, because if the landwhales lose weight there's be no whales to save.

PermalinkIs it really nerdy of me that I find the most offensive thing about the Layla poster is the use of Avant Garde?
