Mini Cooper: From chic to chum.

It seems just yesterday when the Mini Cooper rolled off the boat and onto American soil. With a distinctive style and diminutive scale, and propelled with a revolutionary advertising push by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, it was quickly embraced by trendsetters across the land.

But then something happened - the rest of America jumped on board, threatening to sink the tiny ship of cool that is the Mini Cooper.

Will it become a victim of its own success? Will the Maxi Cooper continue to ride high on the waves of wow, or will it go the way of Quint's boat in Jaws? And have I confused an allegory again because of a few Molsons floating through my system?

Mary Schmich of the Chicago Tribune examines the rise of the Mini machine.
