EGO OFFICIAL appears to have hastily regretted their recent Olympic campaign on Instagram. The campaign used images of Simone Biles at the Paris Olympics, where she won four medals, and made 'humorous' memes about women's reactions to men.
The memes featured taglines such as ‘when he finally views your story’ or ‘finally texts you back’ alongside images of women winning medals and setting records. Read together, it was as if the Olympians were jumping to mens attention.
As a brand with a primarily young female audience, EGO OFFICIAL missed a great opportunity to celebrate these women's achievements. Instead, they reduced them to memes about men, relationships, and girly airhead stereotypes.
Advertising isn't easy, and neither is getting memes right.
