Directors of “What Maisie Knew” and “The Deep End” enter the advertising market for the first time.
LOS ANGELES - David Siegel and Scott McGehee, the directing duo behind such acclaimed films as The Deep End, Bee Season, Uncertainty and Suture, has signed with Bully Pictures for exclusive, national representation in commercials. Siegel & McGehee’s current film, What Maisie Knew, starring Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgard, has been received with glowing reviews.
“We are super excited to be working with Siegel & McGehee,” says Bully Pictures Executive Producer Astrid Downs. “Their work is beautiful. They are masters at utilizing every shot’s framing and composition in a way that draws you into every situation, making their stories incredibly intimate. In a way, that is what advertisers do to make their target audiences intimately familiar with their brand or product.”
Siegel & McGehee have been working as a writer/director/producer team for more than 20 years. Their first film, Suture, a black & white thriller starring Dennis Haysbert, screened at the Cannes, Toronto and Sundance film festivals and won them instant acclaim. Siegel & McGehee continued their success with The Deep End (starring Tilda Swinton), Bee Season (starring Richard Gere) and Uncertainty (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt).
A contemporary reimagining of the Henry James novel by the same name, What Maisie Knew tells the story of a couple going through a bitter divorce, seen through the eyes of their 6-year-old daughter. NPR called it a rare example of “an excellent movie about a child made for adults.”
Siegel said that he and McGehee are excited to apply their talent to advertising. “And we couldn't be happier than to be doing it with the team at Bully,” he adds. “Their commitment to excellence is exemplary and their enthusiasm for our work really impressed us. We're very much looking forward to the collaboration.”
Bully Pictures has enjoyed notable success in developing commercial careers for film and television directors. It signed Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk) last year and he made his commercial debut shortly thereafter with a campaign for the NFL featuring actor Jeremy Piven. Most recently Bully Pictures secured director Anne Fletcher for exclusive representation, immediately breaking her into commercials with multiple campaigns for Kohl’s. The company also represents Morten Tyldum, director of the 2012 thriller Headhunters.
