Every so often you stumble onto a really bad brand names, some universially so, like Soma® the codeine-based pain reliever. It makes us think of Brave New World's happy pills, or An intoxicating or hallucinogenic beverage, used as an offering to the Hindu gods like the dictionary says.
Still, It can't hold a candle to the candybar in Sweden called Plopp which makes all the UK'ers laugh, just like the Danish candy Spunk does. Thanks to Sisil.net we have photographic evidence of what we think might be the worst brand name ever....
Dried Tofu - called Poo? A pootofustick? I don't want to try this stuff. ;)
i mean... yikes!

PermalinkActually, I think the muscle relaxant Soma was deliberately named after the Brave New World pills.

PermalinkI've heard that the real drug was named after the fictional one, and assumed that it's also a nod to the word "soma" meaning "body", which any biology student would be familiar with. Actually, it's a bit more involved than that, and Sanskrit gets in on the act.
According to the Chambers Dictionary, which I spend far too much time reading:
Soma (1): the body; from Greek soma
Soma (2): a plant or its intoxicating juice, used in ancient Indian religious ceremonies and personified as a god; from the Sanskrit soma, Avestan haoma, meaning "juice"
Soma (3): an imaginary perfect drug described by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World, named after the plant juice above; or (capitalised and trademarked) a drug which relieves pain and is a muscle relaxant
