American Apparel gave recently faced a lot of criticism for employing models who look far too young. In response, the company made a complete U-turn and published an ad featuring models who aren't young at all. Gotcha! This ad was found on the back of The L Magazine.
I hope this doesn't mean that in the future, American Apparel will start using images of grandmas lounging around in colorful underwear to advertise their products. So what was so wrong with the original AA ads? A company cannot claim to be progressive while using outdated advertising tactics. The outcry emerges not from a feminist perspective, but gestaltist.
