Adage reports on a new A&E Billboard that employs an "audio spotlight" widget to beam sound straight "into" passer by's cranium. No, seriously.
It's an ad for "Paranormal State," a ghost-themed series premiering on A&E this week. The billboard uses technology manufactured by Holosonic that transmits an "audio spotlight" from a rooftop speaker so that the sound is contained within your cranium. The technology, ideal for museums and libraries or environments that require a quiet atmosphere for isolated audio slideshows, has rarely been used on such a scale before. For random passersby and residents who have to walk unwittingly through the area where the voice will penetrate their inner peace, it's another story.
Wow, now I'm waiting for the American Apparel ads that beam directly into your gonads. It's just a matter of time, innit?
I do wonder how New Yorkers at large react to this, I suspect many people there already hear voices in their heads. And does it penetrate ipod-buds?
International robotics page on hypersonic sound beams says that "The Hypersonic Sound Waves travel silently through space, up to 300 feet away, then convert into an instant sound source whatever surface they impact. Amazingly, if you aim this magical device at a person, their head will become a speaker, and they will hear your message "inside" their head. " Jesus, talk about ad creepy.
I wonder if crazy New Yorkers even notice a difference. ;)

PermalinkAs a former born and raised crazy New Yorker, I think most people walking down the street are so into their own world that they would barely notice the difference. And of course, as you point out, so many are already hearing random voices in their heads that it might just be another newly hatched personality talking to them! ;=)
